Those Mocking the Pope are Silly

  1. By Abu Onyiani

The recent classless and juvenile display of unhinged sadism by religious and irreligious Nigerians towards the ailing geriatric Pope Francis is cause for alarm.

The nauseous pitiless and ridiculing statements emanating from them in form of mockery and abuse makes me wonder if sickness and death are an unheard of phenomena.

While I may understand where atheists are coming from, I still find it overwhelmingly stupid that an 88 year old Pontiff is being mocked with death.

The vast majority of Nigerians will not even live to be 70, owing to different causative factors such as poor infrastructures like healthcare facilities, good roads and social amenities that countless inept governments have been unable to proffer accurate preventative measures or correctly combat. This is not even mentioning kidnapping, fraud, armed robbery and terrorism.

For those from other religious faiths, it could be explained that they are coming from an angle of revenge due to professed Christians consistently rubbing in our collective faces with glee, the misfortunes or deaths of non Christians. I told someone last week that my family is preparing for a funeral a few days after I lost my granduncle, and her first reply was “I hope he found Christ”.

Imams fall sick and die, so do traditional religious priests or gurus, so why should an aspiring nonagenarian be laughed at because he is sick, particularly since you believe he didn’t create himself?

Nonetheless, the most disgusting group of brain dead morons are the rank and file Christians from other denominations, particularly the supri-supri speaking Pentecostal Christians who have long been brainwashed that real Christians do not get sick.

Benson Idahosa and T.B. Joshua are amongst the most prominent Christians Nigeria has ever had, and they both never got to 60. The shocking disconnect from reality and the absence of common logic, particularly from supposedly educated people is discomforting, discombobulating and disturbing.

No matter how disgusted I am reading supposed members of the religion of love showing hate, I am not surprised. For example, Nigerian mega pastors travel outside the country to secretly visit doctors, after selling fortification charms, bracelets, holy waters and other religious paraphernalia for ridiculous prices. They are Christians who are taught to believe they are toe rags to pastors they believe are infallible with Teflon grade spiritual, medical and financial bulletproofs. Their pastors hide even a common cold or headache from them, for fear of feeling human.

But the truth is, these pastors are as vulnerable to viruses and diseases like us, even sexually transmitted diseases, and they fall sick too.

It is not a good thing to mock an old man over illness or death, particularly when it is almost certain the vast majority of us will not get to that age.

Shame on you if you mocked Pope Francis.
